Meet, engineer Namita Sharma, Founder of Dehradun (India)-based Godwit Khadi, a startup with passion for khadi, and that too without any textile background. Started recently, Godwit Khadi is a small organization which is 100 per cent into khadi. Namita recently participated at its first ever international sourcing fair and talked to Apparel Resources , “I’ve always had interest in fashion and strong fashion sense too. Khadi business was my father’s dream so I was enthralled about this step.”
She further added, “People across the world are still not aware about Indian tradition and culture; khadi and its benefits. Similarly in India it has faded away, although there is enough scope in this segment. Being handmade, khadi has such a nice feel, and fur doesn’t tear as well. It remains cool in summer and warm in winter. Khadi business is also a great employment generator in many rural areas, so this initiative will also help the society. There is a class which prefers such products despite being costly and they pay price happily for purity and craftsmanship. Once a person uses and gets sense of khadi, khadi silk, he/she definitely wants to keep some garments of such fabric.”

From sourcing perspective, it is okay for the company to work from Dehradun but as far as supply to market is concerned, it is little tough, especially at the beginning stage, but Namita hopes it will get better with time. Offering complete range of men’s, women’s and kids’ wear, and focusing on western as well as ethnic wear, the firm has a small manufacturing unit.
“Till now I am reasonably satisfied with my overall experience about my business as we have good market in Uttarakhand and Karnataka. Despite initial limited availability of resources, I am moving forward every day as increasing circle and exposure of overall supply chain is proving to be a big support,” concluded Namita, who is in process to finalize its first export shipment.
